There are two main types: absolute and incremental (relative). The
output of an absolute encoder indicates the current position of the
shaft, making it an angular sensor. The output of an incremental
encoder provides information about the motion of the shaft, which
is often further processed elsewhere into information such as
speed, distance and position.
